High Speed Printer

The high speed, mechanical on the fly printer prints characters by having the paper pressed by reciprocating hammers against selected, raised print heads.

A paper web 1 travels continuously between a matrix of hammers 2 and a matrix of print heads 3 at a high speed of the order of 6000 lines per minute. The hammers 2 are reciprocated continuously. They strike selected print heads 3 to print a character only where a head has been raised to the print position.

Each character position in a line of print is associated with a column of print heads. Each column consists of as many print heads as there are different characters which might be printed in each character position. If, for example, a D is to be printed in a line of type as the fifth character position, the print head D in the fifth column of print heads is raised when the line of type passes over it. A web of carbon paper 4 travels with the paper web 1. Preferably the cyclical operations of the hammers are differently phased.
