Linear Polyester Binder for Ferromagnetic Coatings

Binders for coating magnetic particles on tapes, paper and plastic cards are formed from thermoplastic essentially linear polyesters.

A condensation polymer of ethylene terephthalate modified with other glycols and/or dibasic acids provides the basis of this linear polyester binder. Magnetic particles are dispersed in the polyester with the aid of solvents such as p- dioxane, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran and methyl ethyl ketone. A lower coefficient of friction or antiwetting properties are produced in the binder by the addition of polymerized dimethyl siloxane.
