Electro-Optical Circuit

This bistable electro-optical circuit includes a photoconductor element PC-1 and an electroluminescent element EL parallel-connected to a constant current source.

In the unlatched state of the circuit, PC-1 is exposed to ambient light of frequency V1. As PC-1 is photoconducting, the resistance of EL is higher than PC-1, creating more current flow through PC-1 than EL. When a pulse of light of frequency Vq is shone on PC-1, the photoconductivity of this element is quenched and its resistance increases. The current now flowing through EL causes luminescence at frequency Vq. With PC-1 exposed to this radiation from EL, a latch is established after the signal pulse is turned off.

To unlatch the circuit, a pulse of light of frequency V2 is applied to PC-1, decreasing its resistance so that EL now ceases to luminesce.
