Abstract

A record card 10 is conveyed by conventional feed rollers (not shown) relative to a flexible nonconductive rod 11. Rod 11 is fixed at one end to a stationary member 12 and at its other end to a fixedly positioned, pressure sensitive resistor 13. The spacing between member 12 and resistor 13 is such that rod 11 bows into the card path. The diameter of 11 is slightly smaller than the width of the perforations in the record cards to enable rod 11 to enter them.

Sensing Apparatus

A record card 10 is conveyed by conventional feed rollers (not shown) relative to a flexible nonconductive rod 11. Rod 11 is fixed at one end to a stationary member 12 and at its other end to a fixedly positioned, pressure sensitive resistor 13. The spacing between member 12 and resistor 13 is such that rod 11 bows into the card path. The diameter of 11 is slightly smaller than the width of the perforations in the record cards to enable rod 11 to enter them.

The resistor 13 is connected in a circuit as shown. In the absence of a perforation, rod 11 is urged upwardly by card 10 so as to apply pressure upon resistor 13 to cause it to have a low resistance. Under this condition, the voltage between the output terminals 14 and 15 is at V. When a perforation is encountered, the rod 11 is permitted to relax, reducing the pressure applied upon resistor 13. This increases the resistance of 13 and, in response to this change in resistance, the voltage between terminals 14 and 15 rises to V1, providing an indication of a perforation.
