Printing at very high speeds is achieved by passing electrically sensitive paper between a rotating magnetic drum and print rolls.

Each print roll is made up of one hundred twenty-eight electrically isolated print wheels. Each print roll carries a different character, there being twenty-six alphabetic characters, ten numeric characters and fourteen special characters. One stationary read head RA1... RA128, etc., is provided for each wheel of every print roll, there accordingly being a series of lines of read heads, RA, RB, RC, etc. In addition there are one hundred twenty-eight stationary write heads W1... W128 and a similar number of stationary erase heads (E1 to E128).

The paper enters the printer from the left, passes between the counterclockwise rotating drum and the clockwise rotating print rolls and then leaves on the right. Information to be printed is magnetically entered line-by-line in binary code on the face of the drum by the write heads. Each magnetically recorded line then passes under each line of read heads RA1... 128, RB1... 128, etc., in sequence.

A read head produces a signal if a magnetic binary character in its line and at its position corresponds to the character on its print wheel. For instance, if write heads W1, W2 and W3 wrote HAD, then read heads RA2, RH1 and RD3 emit signals.
