Abstract

The device quickly starts the movement of a tape 20 by electrostatically clutching it to a rotating capstan 10. The latter is surrounded by a stationary electrostatic field 24 having a clover leaf pattern. Tape 20 includes a conductive coating 23 deposited on a Mylar* web 20 having a magnetic recording on an upper surface 21. Tape 20 is received by the capstan surface and leaves it at nulls in the pattern.

The latter is surrounded by a stationary electrostatic field 24 having a clover leaf pattern. Tape 20 includes a conductive coating 23 deposited on a Mylar* web 20 having a magnetic recording on an upper surface 21. Tape 20 is received by the capstan surface and leaves it at nulls in the pattern.

Capstan 10 comprises a plurality of parallel conductive bars 11 imbedded about its surface. Bars 11 are insulated from each other and are labeled 1, 2, and 3, which are respectively connected to slip rings 1, 2, and 3 by conductors (not shown). The slip rings are insulatedly fixed to a shaft 17 along with capstan 10 and a synchronous motor 12. The slip rings are engaged respectively by brushes 13 which connect to a Yconnected three-phase source of power through a phase adjuster and switch 26. Motor 12 is connected to and driven by the same power source.

A dielectric film 16 is provided as a final outer cover about capstan 10 so that coating 23 of the tape does not directly contact bars 11.

The field is maintained stationary with respect to the supporting frame of a tape transport by having the field of motor 12 reversely connected to the power source with respect to the electrostatic field of capstan bars 11.
