Tape Reel Securing Means

The expanding arbor device latches a tape reel onto a drive shaft. The device is designed for quickly attaching and detaching a magnetic tape reel in a tape sensing device.

The drawing (upper right) shows the three main parts involved by which the tape reel 11 is rapidly secured to an expanding arbor 12 by means of knob 13.

The interior construction of the arbor is shown in the exploded view. Drive shaft 14 has fastened on it a circular shouldered drum 15 with a central hub 16 having a tapped central opening 17. Assembled against the flange of drum 15 is an inner hoop or ring 18 which has a tapered outer edge 19. This edge 19 cooperates with a related opposed taper 20 formed on one inner edge of the outwardly expanding mandrel 21. This is also formed with a second inner tapered face 22 cooperating with a taper 23 on a second inner ring 24. Rings 18 and 24 operate as compressive wedges which, when forced together, expand the slotted mandrel 21. Ring 24 is formed with a central opening 25 cooperating with the tapered edge 26 of a small bushing 27 which is a spacer between ring 24 and knob 13. Knob 13 is fastened to a tightening screw 28 which passes through all the ring parts mentioned and is threaded into the tapped opening 17 in the center of the drum 15. However, before the parts are finally assembled, a short nylon set screw 29 is inserted into the tapped opening 17. It is located at such a depth as to act as a stop so that knob 13 is p...
