Abstract

This switch has vertically spaced, upper and lower sets of reed switches 1, each arranged in vertically aligned rings, in a related housing 2. A permanent magnet 3 is connected by rod 4 to depressible key 5 that is biased by spring 6 to an upper limit position. In this position, the magnet is disposed within the upper set of reed switches. It concurrently energizes all switches of the set and they connect their inputs IN to their respective outputs OUT. All switches of the lower set are concurrently de-energized.

Multi-position Transfer Switch

This switch has vertically spaced, upper and lower sets of reed switches 1, each arranged in vertically aligned rings, in a related housing 2. A permanent magnet 3 is connected by rod 4 to depressible key 5 that is biased by spring 6 to an upper limit position. In this position, the magnet is disposed within the upper set of reed switches. It concurrently energizes all switches of the set and they connect their inputs IN to their respective outputs OUT. All switches of the lower set are concurrently de-energized.

When key 5 is depressed, magnet 3 is moved down within the lower set of switches. This energizes all switches of the lower set to close the respective circuits. All switches of the upper set are now de-energized.

By connecting the IN of a switch 1 of the upper set with the IN of a corresponding switch of the lower set, the device operates as a transfer switch to connect a common input selectively to one or the other of two outputs. If spacer 7 is thick enough, the switches 1 of both sets are concurrently de-energized when the magnet is positioned within 7. If spacer 7 is eliminated or its thickness is materially reduced, the device is a make before break type of device.
