Bumper For Gliding Heads

The method protects gliding shoes and recording disks from damage caused by occasional contact.

Damaging contacts between the shoe 1 and the disk 2 occur at the edges of the shoe, when the shoe tilts as it is lowered into recording position. A bumper 3 of material, which is resilient compared to that of the disk surface, is mounted in a recess 4 around the edge of the face of the shoe.

Bumper 3 provides the necessary edge protection while retaining the desired rigidity of the shoe.
