Esaki Diode Production

A disc-shaped header base 10 has three connector leads 11, 12 and 13, the extremities of which extend slightly above one surface.

A slab 14 of germanium is soldered to a nickel strip 15 intermediate its ends. The strip carrying slab 14 has its end portions welded to the extremities of the leads 11 and 12 in such manner as to dispose the slab generally facing the lead
13.

An AlSn alloy wire 16 is welded to the extremity of the lead 13, while an end of the wire is maintained in bearing contact with the germanium slab.

Passing an electric current through strip 15 provides heat for simultaneously forming a tunnel diode junction between wire 16 and slab 14 and creating an electrical connection at the same point.
