Recording Vibrations And Shocks

The device records on magnetic tape the vibrations and shocks to which an object is subjected during shipment. An accurate recording of various vibrations and shocks, including sustained high frequency vibrations, is achieved.

The recorder includes a frame 10 having on its top side rails three accelerometers 11 directed in mutually perpendicular planes. The frame is securely bolted to the object's frame or packing, preferably near its center of gravity, if large. The accelerometer impulses are applied through corresponding amplifiers 12 to electromagnets 13. Each electromagnet 13 records the signal from its related accelerometer 11 on a magnetic tape 14. The reels for the tapes are driven by a common motor 15 to insure that the tapes are always in phase with one another.

Vibrations, particularly high frequency ones, and shocks to which the object is subjected along three axes during transit are recorded with greater accuracy than when using mechanical devices. The data obtained in this manner is used for product and package development.
