A resilient type bearing element 10, supported by movable carriage member 11, is struck by print hammers 12 operable by magnets 13. Springs 14 bias hammers 12 to their retracted position, and stop bar 15 limits their forward motion.

Type bearing element 10 takes the form of a single bar of resilient material having a plurality of individually flexible type bearing fingers 16 extending from a common base 17. Characters 18 are formed on the extremities of fingers 16. Each of the fingers 16 has a structure or shape designed to give it a spring rate which matches the surface area of the associated character 18. Thus, a uniform striking force from hammers 12 causes all of the characters to strike ink ribbon 19 and paper 20 against platen 21 with a uniform imprint pressure.
