Interplanetary Navigation

This system effects interplanetary navigation of a space vehicle. The system detects departures of the vehicle trajectory from a preselected reference trajectory about the sun.

The technique consists in making certain sun and star sightings at specified times. These are compared with reference values which should exist along the preselected trajectory at given times in the absence of error. Differences between the actual and reference values are used to compute course correction signals in order to achieve proper guidance of the vehicle.

Apparatus for implementing this system includes a sun position sensor which orients the interplanetary vehicle so that a common axis between the sun position sensor and a telescope includes the sun. The field of view of the telescope includes a number of stars which are scanned by a vidicon tube. The vidicon tube relays digital information to the computer aboard the vehicle which stores the reference values and computes the course correction signals.
