Winding Arrangement in Magnetostrictive Vibrators

The arrangement produces an approximately optimum electromechanical coupling on excitation of magnetostrictive longitudinal vibrators. These are clamped at the node of vibration.

The exciting coil is so arranged that the magnetic field intensity is highest in the node of vibration 1 of the rod. The intensity decreases towards the antinodes 2 in accordance with the alternating pressure and the size of the deformations, respectively, along the free swinging rod. That is, it is in accordance with a sine function.

Such variation of magnetic field intensity along the rod is achieved by a sinusoidal distribution of the winding density of the coil 3. It is also realized by a corresponding continuous change of the winding diameter of the coil 4. Thus, either the winding density is greatest or the winding diameter is smallest in the node 1.
