Abstract

This device is arranged to measure small mechanical displacements by varying the exposure of a plurality of optical fibers to a light source as a result of motion of the displaceable element. A plurality of optical fibers 3 is bundled together and is enclosed for a portion of their length by a sheath 5. The left ends of the fibers are fanned out. Collimated light rays fall on the ends of the fibers when not intercepted by member 7, the displacement of which is to be measured.

At the opposite ends of the optical fibers there is provided a plurality of photoresponsive devices 9 which function to change the optical or light energy received to variations in electrical energy. These electrical outputs are supplied to suitable counting or registering means, not shown, which then register the variations in illumination of the photoresponsive devices 9 caused by displacement of the member 7 at the left end of the optical fibers 3.
