Documents 1, 2... n having random length (left figure) are supported on a hopper platform 3 in longitudinal proximity to an aligning guide 4. A feed wheel 5, having a frictional material 6 such as rubber about its periphery, is normally in frictional engagement with the top most document. Wheel 5 is driven through intermediate gearing held by a support 7. Documents are fed to a separator belt 8 and a restraint belt 9 for transportation, one at a time, in the direction indicated by the arrow 10. The peripheral speed of the feed wheel 5 is, in a typical case, less than that of the separator belt 8.
A belt 11, engaged with a pulley 12, drives the feed wheel 5 through a bevel gear 13 and a spider gear 14 with which the bevel gear 13 is engaged. The gear 14 is fixed to wheel 5 and both are rotatably mounted on a shaft 15 which is supported by a spider cage 16. The cage 16 has a pin 17 which projects upwardly between two stop pins A and B. The latter limit travel of cage 16 about the axis of rotation of the pulley 12 and the gear 13.
