Abstract

A bearing for supporting thrust load is shown. A lubricant is supplied under pressure to the apertures 1 and 2 in the bearing housing 3. The lubricant spreads to the left and to the right. That which passes to the right builds up a pressure P between the shaft 4 and the housing 3. The shaft moves to the left to expose a portion of port 5. When port 5 is exposed, the pressure of the confined lubricant drops until an equilibrium condition is reached between force F and the pressure P. In this manner, the lubricant provides both radial and axial support for the shaft.
