Abstract

A resilient magnetic drum 11 is axially movable a limited distance between a pair of end bells 12 and 13. This permits selectively positioning different circumferential record tracks on the drum under a series of stationary transducer heads 14 mounted in a head bar 15. Positioning of the drum is controlled by selective energization of one of a plurality of separate coils 16 disposed around the inner circumference of end bell 12.

A resilient magnetic drum 11 is axially movable a limited distance between a pair of end bells 12 and 13. This permits selectively positioning different circumferential record tracks on the drum under a series of stationary transducer heads 14 mounted in a head bar 15. Positioning of the drum is controlled by selective energization of one of a plurality of separate coils 16 disposed around the inner circumference of end bell 12.

These coils cooperate magnetically with a magnetic positioning strip 18 on the end of drum 11 disposed inside end bell 12. When one of the coils 16 is energized through conductor 20 and the associated slip ring, strip 18 is attracted and positions the strip and drum 11 concentrically with the energized coil. Drum 11 is thus controllably moved so that heads 14 cooperate with different ones of the record tracks.
