Data Processing System With Remote Station

Provision is made in a data processing system having a remote station RS, and a data processing center DPC, for manually selective data transfer operations between RS and DPC, as well as automatic operations.

Characters are entered one at a time from an input output device 1, such as a typewriter, through a decoder 2, into a buffer 3, to form a message, which corresponds to one line of characters on the typewriter. The entire message is then transferred to storage in a magnetic tape unit (MTU) 4, during the carriage return interval, by transfer pulses from a control unit 5, on line 6 to the buffer 3, and on line 7 to a tape adapter unit (TAU) 8 which synchronizes the transfer of data between the buffer 3 and MTU 4.

Status circuitry 9 and a manually operable switch 10 permit the operator at RS to establish a Data Available (DA) status, or a Data Not Available (DNA) status, when data recording operations cease, and prior to a scheduled interrogation by DPC. A module TR 11 transmits and receives data, serially by bit, to and from DPC on the lines 12 and 13. Interrogation of RS through TR 11 is manually initiated by ringing current on line 13 from a switchboard (PBX) 14, which in conjunction with Status 9, via line 15, turns on RS power and establishes a transmit mode for TR 11 on line 16, if data are available at RS.

When Data Available is indicated, DPC transmits a synchronizing character, followed by a start character, on...
