Three-Phase Fuse

In three-phase circuits it is well known that one phase may become overloaded and a fuse blow, but the two remaining phases may still conduct. The device is designed to insure that blowing of a fuse in one phase causes the disconnection of at least one of the remaining phases.

A metal plate 10, having upstanding open ended cups 11 extruded from it, forms the base of the fuse. Positioned in each cup is a conductor 12 insulated from the plate by a ceramic button 14. A fusible link 15 is secured to the top of each conductor and is in turn connected through a terminal 16 to one of the three wires of the load circuit. A tension spring 17 is secured to the bottom of each conductor and then connected in the line circuit by a terminal 18.

When one of the fusible links burns out or breaks for any reason, the action of its associated spring rocks the base plate out of normal position bringing the remaining two fuses into contact with their associated cups. This short circuits the fuses through the base to melt one or both of the fuses, so opening the remaining phases of the circuit.
