Control Tension Gradient Rewind System

During a high speed tape rewind operation this servo control system maintains a steadily decreasing tension on the tape by maintaining a constant torque on the rewind reel servo motor.

The speed of the servo motor for the rewind reel is monitored by a tachometer. The tachometer signal which is directly proportional to the speed of rotation of the servo motor is fed into a mixer. A fixed error signal is also fed into the mixer. Since the mixer is a difference amplifier, its output increases as the signal from the tachometer decreases.

This output is fed through a servo amplifier to the field winding of the rewind reel servo-motor. As the load on the servo-motor increases, its speed is reduced. The modifying signal from the mixer is increased regulating the field current to maintain the servo-motor torque at a constant level. The desired decreasing tension rewind characteristic is thus attained.

The signal from the tachometer monitoring the rewind reel servo motor is also transmitted through a rectifier and a D.C. amplifier to the field winding of the unwind reel servo-motor. This controls the dynamic braking of the unwind reel's servo-motor to further control the tape tension.
