Automatic MU Measuring Apparatus

The apparatus affords an automatic measurement of the amplification factor or mu of an electron tube. Mu is defined as the ratio of a change in anode voltage to a small change in control electrode voltage, the anode current remaining constant.

A fixed bias for the tube 10 under test is provided by a battery 11 and a resistor 12 connected between the grounded cathode and the grid of the tube. A source 13, which is also connected between those electrodes, preferably is one which is adjustable to apply predetermined voltages to those electrodes to vary the anode voltage of 10. With such a source, a digital voltmeter 14, which may be calibrated directly in terms of mu, affords the indication desired when connected between the anode and the cathode of the tube.

A battery 15 has its negative terminal grounded and its positive terminal connected through the anode-cathode path of a series regulator tube 16 and through the primary winding 17 of a transformer 18 to the anode of tube 10. The secondary winding 19 of the transformer has one terminal connected to ground and its other terminal connected through a capacitor 20 to the grid of a control tube 21. The anode of tube 21 is connected through a resistor 22 to the positive terminal of the battery 15 while its grid is connected thereto through a resistor 23.
