Variable Evaluate

The arrangement effects a variable evaluate operation in a magnetic drum type general purpose electronic computer similar to the IBM Type 610 Computer. It uses the position of the decimal point in the Op Command Register in such a manner that it controls the number of computation cycles.

Conventionally, data bits are recorded on the main storage portion of the drum in digit locations sequentially numbered 1 through 32. Clock pulses are generated in synchronism with the drum rotation so that the reading and recording in each digit location is controlled. A data bit read from a digit location in main storage by Read Amp 1 is recorded in the buffer by Record Amp 2 without delay. This data bit appears at the Read Amp 2 thirty-one digit locations later with respect to time. Record Amp 1 is controlled so as to erase at all digit locations unless a data bit activates Record Amp 1. The data bit appearing at Read Amp 2 appears at the Record Amp 1 without delay for recording in a main storage digit location. Conventionally, a data bit is shifted by one digit location for each complete cycle of data transfer from main storage to buffer storage and return to main storage.
