Abstract

Mercury is employed to disable selected magnetic cores in a matrix to permit desired information or switching patterns to be entered. The cores and drive lines of the matrix are encapsulated in a solid base of suitable plastic material. Apertures are provided in the base at each core position to form an open well around each core. A deformable tray partially filled with mercury is beneath the base and is sealed to it. A masking device having holes at selected points is inserted between the mercury and the base. The masking device may be a perforated record card.

Mercury is employed to disable selected magnetic cores in a matrix to permit desired information or switching patterns to be entered. The cores and drive lines of the matrix are encapsulated in a solid base of suitable plastic material.

Apertures are provided in the base at each core position to form an open well around each core. A deformable tray partially filled with mercury is beneath the base and is sealed to it. A masking device having holes at selected points is inserted between the mercury and the base. The masking device may be a perforated record card.

Upon application of compressive force to the tray, mercury is forced against the mask and into any wells which are in register with perforations in the mask. The mercury surrounds the cores in the wells to which it has been admitted and forms, in effect, short circuited windings around them. Current is then applied to the drive windings of one or both of the coordinate groups to cause a flux reversal in all cores. Those cores having the short circuited turns of mercury cannot switch flux. Consequently, only the unshorted cores are set and information relating to the pattern of perforations in the record card is written into the matrix. This information is read out by known matrix reading techniques.

The information contained in the matrix is changed at will by changing masks, so that different ones of the cores are shorted.
