Tab Card Bed With Card Support Rails

The transmitting terminal is used in a data transmission system composed of one or more of these terminals. Data are sent by way of conventional telephone lines to a central data receiving station.

The terminal comprises a record card reader and a ten digit key board including several functional control keys. The card reading apparatus comprises a single row of sensing brushes and a card carriage protruding from the side of the terminal. The bed of the carriage contains a plurality of rows (one for each index row of the card) of conductive mesa-like projections M (there being one such projection for each possible hole position in the card) to facilitate the sensing of the holes in the card by the sensing brushes.

Cards are inserted individually in the carriage. The carriage is manually and slideably moved into the terminal. The operator releases the carriage. As the carriage is mechanically driven to its normally projecting position, the columns of the card are read serially column by column by the row of brushes. The data representing signals are transmitted to the central data receiving station.

The entire carriage does not project from the side of the terminal. As a salient feature and to facilitate the insertion of the card into the carriage and over the mesa-like projections M, card support rails CR are provided. These rails CR are arbitrarily located midway between certain rows of the mesa-like projections M and extend a...
