Magnetic Commutator

A magnetic commutator is provided for conveying comminuted magnetic particles 10 from a hopper 11. It is particularly adapted to apply magnetic ink in a uniform dispersion to the magnetic latent character images on a drum 12 of a magnetic printing machine.

A conveyor 13 consists of a hollow shaft 14 on which cylinder 15 is mounted. A series of slots in the cylinder support magnetic segments 16, 17, alternate ones of which are oppositely magnetized by a stationary magnet 18 through tabs 16A and 17A which pass opposite poles of the magnet. Apertures 19 provide air ports through which air streams from an elongated slot like jet 20 are directed to flex away a non-magnetic band 21 which carries the particles 10.

The coaction of the hopper and the rotating conveyor acts as a picker feeder which slices the lowermost stratum of magnetic particles from the comminuted mass 10 and deposits it evenly over the surface of the conveyor. The ink is transferred to the print drum 12 when the air stream flexes the band 21.
