A method of erasing a direct viewing storage tube involves, primarily, adjusting the relative potentials of the flood gun, storage mesh, and collector mesh.

One such method is to raise the storage mesh potential to that of the collector mesh, then raise the potential of both together to a value at which secondary emission erases all areas equally. This potential is maintained for a period long enough to complete the erasure, after which the potentials of both meshes are lowered together to the operating potential of the storage mesh. The collector mesh potential is then raised gradually to its operating potential. During the erase cycle, the flood gun is not changed from its normal operating potential.
