Digital Phase Angle Meter Control

This is a system for determining and displaying the phase angle between two sinusoidal signals of the same frequency.

The input signals 10 and 12 are amplified and clipped in clipping amplifiers 14 and 16, respectively. They are shaped in the differentiator diode clamps 18 and 20 to produce pulses 22 and 24, respectively, at the positive slope zero crossing 26 and 28 of each cycle. The pulses 22 and 24 alternately turn the bistable multivibrator 30 on and off. The multivibrator 30 output 32 then gates the output of an accurate 360 kilocycle oscillator 34 in accordance with the time difference between pulses 22 and 24 to produce oscillation burst 36. Individual cycles in each burst 36 are counted and accumulated by a standard electronic counter 38 for precisely one second. A digital display of the phase angle relationship results.
