Non-linear Capacitor

An element which exhibits a high degree of non linear capacitance is shown. It may be used to advantage in parametric amplifier or oscillator circuits. A plurality of such circuits may be connected together as is shown in U. S. Patent 2, 815,488 to perform logical and other operations required of a computing system.

The element consists of a back plate 10 on which there is mounted a crystal 12 of ferroelectric material such as barium titanate or potassium niobate. This dielectric material exhibits a dielectric constant of the order of 10 in the temperature region just above its Curie point. The crystal is provided with a whisker connection, making contact over an area of about 1.6 mils to provide a capacitance of the order of 10 microfarads. The geometry of the electric field when a voltage signal is applied to the whisker electrode connected in this way is such as to cause electric fields of high intensity to be produced in the surrounding dielectric even for small applied voltage signals. Since the non linearity of the ferroelectric varies as a power of the intensity of this electric field, pronounced non linearity is achieved for applied voltages of the order of only one volt.

The whisker connection may be provided with an amalgam at its tip or a gold evaporated electrode may be used in its place. In the latter case, the crystal is subjected to no strain and the behavior of the device is easy to predict based upon the constants for the bul...
