Abstract

In this data transmission system data are sent by way of conventional telephone lines to a central data receiving station from one or more data transmitting terminals. The data is read from a record card or it is keyed on a ten digit keyboard and transmitted over telephone wires to the central station where it is automatically punched in new record cards. Normal telephone dialing and voice communication establishes the connection from the data transmitting terminal to the central station.

In this data transmission system data are sent by way of conventional telephone lines to a central data receiving station from one or more data transmitting terminals. The data is read from a record card or it is keyed on a ten digit keyboard and transmitted over telephone wires to the central station where it is automatically punched in new record cards. Normal telephone dialing and voice communication establishes the connection from the data transmitting terminal to the central station.

The transmitting terminal is composed of a card reader, a ten digit keyboard including several functional keys, and a speaker. Various numerical data can be introduced into the system by pressing the ten digit keys. Numerical data can also be read from record cards by the reader for introduction into the system. The speaker at the data transmitting terminal is used to advise the operator through the use of variously coded audible signals of different operating conditions. The card reader comprises a single row of sensing brushes and a card carriage protruding from the side of the data transmitting terminal. Cards are inserted individually in the carriage. The carriage is manually moved into the terminal until it strikes a carriage stop. Data are read from the card as the carriage returns to its normal rest position.

The central data receiving station is composed of a card punch and a data translator. The latter converts the numerical and functional code signals received from the telephone lines for use at the central station.
