The Exclusive Or circuit indicates, by the polarity of its outputs, which one of the two inputs is activated. The magnitude of the output may also indicate the time relationship of the inputs.

The circuit has two inputs R and B. Input R is inverted by inverter I and fed to AND 10 and OR 11. Therefore, UP pulse R becomes DOWN pulse bar R. Input B also is fed to AND 10 and OR 11. The output from AND 10 is UP only when both inputs bar R and B are UP. The output of OR 11 is UP when either or both inputs bar R and B are UP. The output from OR 11 is DOWN only when both inputs bar R and B are DOWN.

Mixer circuit 12 receives signals bar RB from unit 10 and bar R + B (bar R or
B) from unit 11. The function of 12 is to provide UP and DOWN pulses based on pulses received from units 10 and 11. Thus, when outputs of 10 and 11 are UP, the output 13 of mixer 12 is UP. When outputs of 10 and 11 are DOWN, the output 13 is DOWN. If only 10 or 11 is UP, output 13 is DOWN.

The output 13 does not respond immediately to inputs R and B because of an inherent response time. The leading edge of an output pulse is sloped instead of perpendicular. Therefore, the wider the pulse, the higher the pulse will be, up to the maximum height. Thus, the magnitude of the output pulse may be calibrated to indicate the time relationship of a series of input pulses.
