Sorting Machine

An automatic card handling machine first sorts cards in accordance with selected, sensed data. After the sorting run the machine automatically returns the cards to the card hopper for a subsequent sorting run.

Cards 10 are fed from a hopper 11 by feed rolls 12 past a sensing station where selected data are sensed and the cards are accordingly sorted in pockets
13. When all cards are sorted, they are moved from the pockets laterally by transport rollers 14. These are raised into contact with the cards in the hopper and move them onto rollers 15 in an auxiliary hopper 16. An adjustable pressure plate 17 holds the cards upright and compacted.

After the cards are moved into the auxiliary hopper 16, the hopper is raised on arms 18 from its lower dotted line position to the upper solid line position on a level and closely adjacent the main hopper 11. The rollers 15 are then actuated to move the cards laterally into the main hopper after which the hopper 16 is returned to its lower position and a second run of the cards is initiated.
