Abstract

Circuitry is provided in a typewriter tape punch which causes the automatic punching of a shift code and then a character code on the actuation of the first type key when there is a change from alphabetic to numeric characters or vice versa. A numeric key causes a figures shift code to be punched followed by the punching of the keyed number. Thereafter, as long as figure keys are operated, only the code for the keyed numbers is punched. When an alphabetic character is subsequently keyed, a letters code is punched before the first character. Thereafter only the codes for the alphabetic characters are punched until a number key is operated.

Typewriter Tape Punch

Circuitry is provided in a typewriter tape punch which causes the automatic punching of a shift code and then a character code on the actuation of the first type key when there is a change from alphabetic to numeric characters or vice versa. A numeric key causes a figures shift code to be punched followed by the punching of the keyed number. Thereafter, as long as figure keys are operated, only the code for the keyed numbers is punched. When an alphabetic character is subsequently keyed, a letters code is punched before the first character. Thereafter only the codes for the alphabetic characters are punched until a number key is operated.

A letters code relay is common connected to each of the alphabetic keys so that the relay is picked up when the first alphabetic key is operated. It is held until a numeric key is operated which picks up a figures relay and drops out the letters relay. Picking up of a figures or letters relay completes circuits to the punches to punch the figures and letters codes, respectively. Picking of a relay, figures or letters, opens the pickup circuit to that relay from keys of the same type.

The figures or letters code is punched in a first punch cycle followed automatically by a second punch cycle in which the keyed figure or letter is punched.
