United States Patent No. 2,939,758 describes a modification of a conventional typewriter which effects a simultaneous magnetic and printed recordation of data. Improved vertical recording is obtained by a modification of the device of Fig. 1 of the patent.

A permanent magnet or a continuously energized electromagnet 30 is placed parallel to and behind magnetic tape 17 at recording station 13. A magnetic printing block 21 (right drawing) is substituted for the individual recording magnets of the patented device. Block 21 (left drawing) has highly permeable slugs 31, conforming to characters in known bit codes, imbedded in a non- magnetic material 32.

The flux field from magnet 30 does not record on tape 17 unless slugs 31 change the configuration of the flux path to permit a stronger perpendicular field to flow through tape 17.

Magnetized tape 17 is read with a multi-channel probe having playback heads conforming to the desired bit positions.
