Random Character Generator

A six position primary counter, which includes bistable triggers T-1... T-32, provides random coded character permutations at output terminals 1...6. This is a result of the combined count control exerted by free running multivibrators MV- 1, MV-2, and MV-3 and associated auxiliary counters LO and HO.

Each trigger position has two inputs and changes state in response to pulses applied to either input. The basic stepping rate of the triggers T-1...T-32 is determined by the frequency of MV-1, established arbitrarily, for example, at 80 kilocycles per second.

Ordinarily, T-1 would count at 40 kc, T-2 at 20 kc, T-4 at 10 kc, T-8 at 5 kc, T- 16 at 2.5 kc and T-32 at 1.25 kc. However, the basic trigger counting rates are altered by MV-2, MV-3 and counters LO and HO.

Multivibrator MV-2 which also operates at an arbitrarily selected frequency, such as 30 kc, drives a two position binary counter which includes triggers LO-1 and LO-2. These are associated with the low order positions T-1, T-2 and T-4 of the primary counter.

MV-2 and the LO counter positions provide count pulses of 7.5 kc, 15 kc and 30 kc to primary counter positions T-1, T-2 and T-4 on lines 7, 8 and 9.

Multivibrator MV-3 operating at a frequency such as 50 kc, in conjunction with another binary counter which has two positions, HO-1 and HO-2, supplies count pulses of 12. 5 kc, 25 kc, and 50 kc on lines 10, 11 and 12, respectively, to the high order positions T-8, T-16 and T-32 of...
