Abstract

A low voltage, high current, low weight regulated power supply is provided employing pulse width control techniques. A square wave symmetrical oscillator 2 is used as a basic frequency generator. The oscillator drives a flux reset Ramey amplifier 4. The magnetic amplifier 4 output drives a transistor inverter circuit 6 so that the latter produces a controlled A.C. output. This is sent through a transformer 8, a rectifier and filter 10, an error detector 12, and back through amplifier 14 to amplifier 4.

Regulated Power Supply

A low voltage, high current, low weight regulated power supply is provided employing pulse width control techniques. A square wave symmetrical oscillator 2 is used as a basic frequency generator. The oscillator drives a flux reset Ramey amplifier 4. The magnetic amplifier 4 output drives a transistor inverter circuit 6 so that the latter produces a controlled A.C. output. This is sent through a transformer 8, a rectifier and filter 10, an error detector 12, and back through amplifier 14 to amplifier 4.

If the load 16 that is driven by such regulated supply varies, the widths of the output pulses p of amplifier 4 vary and become narrowed or widened pulses. A narrowed pulse p increases the width of the output pulses q of inverter 6 and a widened pulse p narrows an output pulse q.

The use of an amplifier using magnetic cores for controlling a transistorized inverter circuit 6 changes uncontrolled D.C. to regulated D.C. Very little of the power supplied at input terminal I passes through the regulator system that includes the amplifier 4.
