Parametric amplifiers are achieved in transmission lines having variable reactance. The transmission lines have a common dielectric and coupling is produced between the pump signal and the signal to be amplified through the interaction of the signals in the dielectric.

The circuit at the left includes a body of ferroelectric material 10 on the top of which are mounted three electrodes 12, 14 and 16 and on the bottom of which is mounted a further electrode 18. Each of the electrodes 12, 14 and 16 forms with electrode 18 a transmission line. The pump signal is applied to the two transmission lines, formed by electrodes 12 and 16 with the electrode 18, by a generator 20. The signal to be amplified is applied by generator 22 to the other transmission line formed by electrodes 14 and 18.

By providing separate lines such as are shown to carry the pump and signal frequencies it is possible to terminate each line in the proper characteristic impedance to achieve optimum amplification. Where the variation of the non linear capacitance of the dielectric 10 produced by the pump signal is large, it becomes difficult to employ a single termination and still achieve optimum amplification of the signal frequency.
