Contactless Switch

A contactless switch may be constructed utilizing electroluminescent and photoconductive materials.

When the button in the contactless switch is depressed, photoconductive rubber contacts the conductive coating on the top of electroluminescent phosphor. An AC circuit is thus completed across the phosphor from ground, through a metal panel, a connecting lead, the conducting rubber, a conducting film, and the conductive coating on the glass plate to an AC source.

An electric field is impressed on the phosphor causing it to glow. The light emitted from the electroluminescent phosphor causes associated photoconductors to conduct.
