Abstract

A high speed apparatus for converting from an electrical impulse to mechanical energy and for producing in a hydraulic system a momentary pressure surge to effect a servo type of control in the system is frequently required. In the apparatus an electric discharge across the electrodes heats the entrapped air or inert gas, causing it to expand and produce a volumetric change in the hydraulic system and introduce a surge for control purposes. Coupled with the above function the apparatus can sever the double function of a pressure accumulator and surge generator. Isolation of the fluid from the arc discharge is performed by a diaphragm which, although not shown, would be interposed as is conventional in hydraulic accumulators.
