Abstract

The diagnostic recorder is designed for use within a Data Processing System and provides a means for surveillance of control and data path circuits as they function within a device. The recorder register comprises triggers which are set to the states of the circuits within the device it is monitoring at any specified point in time either by an error signal from the device it is monitoring or by a Record instruction from the Central Processing Unit. The CPU extracts the contents of the register by a Read instruction, and then processes the contents as data. Usually, the contents of the register which indicate the state of specified circuits of the control units are compared with the predetermined status represented by the contents of a word stored in Memory.

Diagnostic Recorder

As an example of a sequence of operations, connect the triggers of the register to selected lines within the unit to be tested, issue an instruction to the unit such as Write, issue a Record instruction after a predetermined delay, issue a Read instruction to obtain the contents of the register and then compare the recorded status of the device with the known correct status.
