Magnetic Core Translator

The device employs bistable magnetic cores to convert binary coded decimal characters to their corresponding decimal digits. A coded character to be translated is placed in the character register by setting the triggers in on or off states to represent 1's or 0's in the corresponding bit positions of the character.

Each trigger activates either the true or the complement input driver coupled to it, depending upon which output line of the trigger is energized. The input drivers supply current of half select amplitude. The input lines connected to the drivers are coupled to the cores in combinatorial fashion, the sense of the coupling at each core being in a direction to bias the core to the 0 or reset state.

The arrangement of the input lines is such that for any valid code character all cores, except the one representing the decimal digit corresponding to the code character, receive at least two units of halfselect inhibit force. The core representing the corresponding decimal digit has no inhibiting force applied. An invalid character results in the application of inhibit force to all cores.

Identification of the uninhibited core may be accomplished in several ways. If it is only necessary to determine whether the input character is valid, current may be applied to a common set line., coupled to all cores in a direction to drive them to the 1 state.
