Abstract

A cylindrical housing 11 of a high permeability material contains a read probe 13 and a write probe 14 separated from each other by a high permeability shield 15. The probes include coils 13a, 14a and cores 13b and 14b. Each core is made up of a plurality of laminations, the center ones of which are longer than the others and extend through slits 16, 17 in the face of the housing.

Dual Recording Head

A cylindrical housing 11 of a high permeability material contains a read probe 13 and a write probe 14 separated from each other by a high permeability shield 15. The probes include coils 13a, 14a and cores 13b and 14b. Each core is made up of a plurality of laminations, the center ones of which are longer than the others and extend through slits 16, 17 in the face of the housing.

The ends of the extending laminations are copper plated to fill the width of the slits so as to facilitate centering of the probe assemblies in the housing. The copper also serves as an eddy current shield to reduce the flux leakage from the probe to the housing. The read probe tip has a length substantially less than the length of the write probe tip to permit wide-write, narrow-read operation.
