Increased Density Magnetic Recording

High permeability shields 13 are used to increase the recording density in a multi-track system utilizing adjacent recording elements having read-write assemblies 14 and erase assemblies 15.

The shields are disposed in a plane generally parallel to the recording tracks and provide an isolated, low reluctance path for magnetic flux emanating from tracks adjacent to the track immediately underlying the recording element. This prevents entry of flux from adjacent tracks into the recording element to thus reduce cross talk.
