Cathode Ray Tube Multiplier

The circuitry provides a cathode ray tube multiplier which is capable of multiplying a multiplier digit in a multiplier register by a multiplicand digit in a multiplicand register to produce the product in an output register.

The lower drawing shows each stage of the decimal.multiplier register connected to a digital to analog converter which produces a voltage output proportional to the value of the decimal digit. The output of the multiplier digital to analog converter is connected to a vertical deflection plate of the cathode ray tube to produce a downward deflection of the tube beam proportional to the multiplier digit. Similarly, the multiplicand register is connected through its digital to analog converter to a horizontal deflection plate of the cathode ray tube to produce a deflection to the right proportional to the value of the multiplicand digit.

The cathode ray tube has a matrix of metallic targets along the large end of the cathode ray tube envelope which is shown in the upper drawing. Electrical connections extending outside the envelope are attached to each target as shown. Certain of the targets are split and have two partial plates which are,insulated from each other. Unsplit targets are representative of the units position of the product.
