The gist of this device is to provide apparatus for positioning an element utilizing a Hall probe for determining positional error. A Hall probe is moved relatively at right angles to a bi-polar magnetic field to generate a signal across the terminals of the probe.

The signal so generated will have a peak displacement Delta X and a peak- to-peak amplitude Delta Y. The positional zero of the system may then be anywhere with Delta X by differentially introducing a programmed signal which is within the limits of Delta Y. The modified signal may be transmitted to a servo- mechanism which will effect positioning of the element to the predetermined positional zero of this system.
