Single Tube Binary Full Adder

A split deflector, split collector, field emission beam switching tube provides a complete full adder. The tube consists of a field emission electron gun, a triple split set of vertical (or horizontal) deflection plates and a special multiple collector structure having a repeller electrode to prevent the beam from resting between collecting plates.

The deflection plates are biased so as to keep the electron beam on the plate in Section I. The beam, which is elongated in one direction (horizontally in this case) covers almost the entire width of the plates. An input of about 30 or 40 volts on any plate, X, Y, or C, alone, but not any two simultaneously, causes the beam to shift to Section II. Inputs on any two of the plates simultaneously shift the beam to Section III. Inputs on all three plates simultaneously shift the beam to Section IV. The logic or possible combinations of inputs are given. The collector plate is constructed so that connections for a full adder are made internally. The collector is split vertically because two separate X Y C outputs are necessary and horizontal splits are arranged to give the sum and carry outputs.
