In the educational system at A, a student is provided with workbook 1 having a number of pages. Each page is slotted for accommodation of a unit record media, such as a magnetic card having audio or other material recorded on it and associated with the visible printed information on the related page.

Page 2 has slotted area 2a to retain magnetic card 3. In use, the student removes card 3, places it in playback unit 4 that includes various selecting and control buttons at 5. As an example, card 3 can have a recorded question related to the material on page 2 with a number of possible answers selected by depression of buttons A...D and 1...4. Provision is made to automatically step to the selected answer track on card 3 so the student can determine the correctness of his answer. The controls enable the student to listen to the material recorded on the card, to record information, i.e., talk, on predetermined tracks, to repeat the playback of information and to stop the mechanism.

In the arrangement at B, teaching machine 7 has a sloping panel for accommodating workbook 9. Machine 7 has buttons 1...6 and A...D for selecting questions and answers on magnetic card 8 and control buttons designated Repeat, Listen, Talk, and Stop.
