Abstract

A low thermal expansion cordierite glass-ceramic is obtained by lowering the MgO and increasing the A12O3 contents from those described in U.S. Patent 4,301,324. The compositional shift towards stoichiometric cordierite results in a lower expansion material that sinters to a dense, crystallized state when cofired with the reference materials. By using this material as the surface layers of a multi layer glass-ceramic substrate, compressive stresses are developed that strengthen the body by as much as 50%.
