Cash Drawer Locking Mechanism

       Disclosed is a latching mechanism for a point-of-sale
cash drawer, which will resist unintentional opening when the
machine, or its cash drawer, is subjected to impact forces. The
latching mechanism utilizes a toggle joint which requires the
overcoming of two forces holding the toggle in its over center, or
locked, position.

      Fig. 1 shows the latching mechanism in the lock position.  The
drawer 2 may be released when cam 1 is allowed to rotate
counterclockwise.  Toggle joint 3 is held against stop 4 by the
action of over center spring 5 and the pressure of the propulsion
spring 6, preventing counterclockwise rotation of cam 1.  The toggle
may be moved over center for drawer opening in two ways.

      A.  Manual trip cam 7 when rotated by shaft 8 and cylindrical
keylock 9 will cause the toggle release arm 10 to pivot clockwise,
overcoming the toggle forces.  When spring 5 passes over center, the
linkage will transfer to stop 11 by the energy stored in springs 5
and 6.

      B.  Linear actuator 12 when retracted will cause the toggle
release arm 10 to pivot clockwise, overcoming the toggle forces.
This will cause spring 5 to pass over center, and the toggle will
transfer to stop 11 by the spring forces 5 and 6.

      Fig. 2 shows the latching mechanism in the open position.  Upon
transfer of the toggle joint linkage from stop 4 to stop 11, cam 1 is
allowed to turn counterclockwise, which releases drawer...
