Project Management Environment

       This article describes a Project Management Environment
(PME) to include an operating environment, data elements and
application functions and processes.

      PME is a set of application programs which will combine
established project management and activity structuring techniques
with linkage to the computing tools required to perform those
activities.  When implemented on a network of intelligent
workstations, PME will create a shared environment for a project's
participants, providing common access to the tools, information,
context and control necessary to the effective completion of a
project.

      This document is not intended to be a comprehensive functional
specification or design document.  Basic PME functional concepts are
described, and concepts believed unique to PME are identified.  If
and when PME is developed, it may include functions and data elements
that are not described here.  Also, the implementation of functions
and data elements may differ from the suggested implementations.

      Operating Environment It is assumed that PME will be
implemented on a network of intelligent workstations, each supported
by a multitasking operating system, such as OS/2* Extended Edition
(EE).  The PME application programs will run on each intelligent
workstation as discrete tasks controlled by that workstation's
multitasking operating system.

      It also is assumed that these workstations will be connected by
some type of local area network (LAN), such as the IBM Token-Ring
Network or Ethernet, although the specific means of interconnectivity
and interoperability of workstations is not critical to this
disclosure.

      One of the intelligent workstations will act as host or
fileserver to the others on the network, providing storage and
accessibility for all data associated with a particular project or
group of projects.  While in this embodiment the host or fileserver
is an intelligent workstation, it may be a minicomputer or mainframe
supporting the same set of functions.

      Project data will be maintained on the host by a database
program such as DB2*.  This database program will be separate and
distinct from PME application programs. Project data will be provided
to any PME application user requesting it.  Creation, modification or
deletion of project data in the database may be restricted to
authorized PME application users.

      Communication across the network will be facilitated by a LAN
management program, such as the PC LAN Program or the OS/2 LAN Server
and OS/2 EE LAN Requester.  Like the database program, the LAN
management program will be separate and distinct from the PME
application programs. The LAN manager will control network resources,
providing access to PME and project data files, related programs, and
network devices, such as printers and storage media.
